Bring latest thinking back to Notion

Have Cranes comment on your Notion pages when the thinking they fed has moved on.

Pages get written once and then drift out of date. When Notion pages feed your thinking, Cranes can tell you when that happens: if a chapter is redrafted because the thinking moved, and a page it learned from still says the earlier view, Cranes leaves a comment on that page.

It’s off until you turn it on, for each Notion source on its own.

Turn it on

  1. Open Settings › Connected Services and choose the Notion source.
  2. Under Comments in Notion, choose Bring latest thinking back to Notion.

In a team workspace, only owners and admins can turn it on or off. In your personal workspace, it’s yours to choose.

What a comment says

Each comment:

  • sits on the paragraph that still says the earlier view, or on the page itself when no single paragraph does;
  • says whose thinking moved and on which chapter, what changed, and where the thinking stands now;
  • ends with a link to the chapter in Cranes.

Cranes never rewrites the page and never suggests new wording. What to change, if anything, is up to whoever keeps the page. Anyone who opens the chapter link still needs to be able to read that thinking in Cranes.

Cranes leaves a comment only when it’s fairly sure a page relies on the earlier view. It comments at most once a day on any page, and at most ten times a day across one source. If its earlier comment about the same chapter is still open, it replies there instead of starting a new one. Resolve a comment in Notion when you’ve dealt with it.

Who sees the comments

Anyone who can see the page in Notion. Notion doesn’t tell Cranes who that is, so think about it before you turn this on:

The source feeds The comment carries Who might also read it
The team’s thinking The team’s thinking Guests on the page, and anyone with a public link
A group’s thinking The group’s thinking People outside the group who can open the page
Your own thinking Your own thinking Anyone you’ve shared the page with

A comment only ever carries thinking from the place that source feeds, and those pages fed only that thinking.

Recent comments

Under Comments in Notion, Cranes lists the comments it left most recently, newest first, with a link to each page. Only people who can read the thinking the source feeds see this list.

If Notion won’t let Cranes comment

If you see “Notion didn’t let Cranes comment,” choose Choose pages on the same source and allow comments when Notion asks. Connections made before comments were possible need this once.

Turn it off

Choose Stop commenting in Notion. Comments already left stay in Notion until someone resolves or deletes them.
