Archive a chapter or part

Archiving takes a chapter out of your book and out of what Cranes brings into threads and connected AIs. It doesn’t delete anything, and you can restore it whenever you like.

Archive a chapter

Choose ⋯ beside the chapter’s title, then Archive. You’ll see “Archived. Connected AIs no longer receive it.”

Archive a part

Open the part, choose ⋯, then Archive with its chapters. The part and every chapter in it leave the book together.

If Cranes later places a new chapter in a part you archived, that chapter stays in use. It’s listed under the archived part on the Archived page, marked “still in use,” and your front page mentions it under Needs a look so it doesn’t slip by.

Restore

Once you’ve archived something, Archived appears at the foot of your contents, beside Entries. It lists archived parts, with their chapters, and archived chapters on their own. Choose Restore beside an archived part or chapter to bring it back. Restoring a part brings back the chapters that were archived with it; to restore just one of them, open it and choose Restore. Something you moved to the team or a group shows Move back instead.

On the team’s thinking, only owners and admins can archive and restore.

What archiving does and doesn’t do

• The chapter leaves your book, search, and what connected AIs and thread replies receive.
• The entries behind it stay. If an entry supports only archived chapters, it’s left out of what connected AIs receive too; if it also supports a live chapter, it stays in use.
• Cranes may keep developing an archived chapter in the background. If new things you write support it again, the chapter tells you it “came back up.” It is never quietly restored.

Archiving versus removing

Archiving is about the book: this chapter doesn’t belong in it. If the problem is the material itself, go to the entry instead and turn off Learn from this or choose Remove now. That changes what every chapter rests on. See Control how an entry is used.
