Find your way around

Cranes is laid out like a book with a conversation beside it. There are three areas, and each one folds away when you don’t need it.

The contents, on the left

At the top of the contents is a slip, like the title page of a manuscript, naming whose thinking you’re reading: usually Your thinking. Click it to unfold a list of all the thinking you can read here (your own, the team’s, and each of your groups) and switch between them. It’s also where you start a New group.

Below the slip, Front page takes you back to the start. Then come your pinned chapters, and your parts, read like a book’s contents: each part as a heading with its chapters beneath. Whatever you’re reading is marked with a swipe of yellow highlighter.

At the foot are Entries, Archived once you’ve archived something, and, in a group, People.

Press [ or the panel button at the top left to fold the contents away. On a small screen they open over the page instead.

The page, in the middle

The middle shows one page at a time: your front page, a part, a chapter, or your entries. Chapters are set like a book.

Your front page lists everything: what’s pinned, each part with its chapters, and anything that needs a look.

Threads, on the right

Threads is a sheet on the right. It opens on your list of conversations, by date, with a box at the bottom for starting a new one; choose one to read it, and the arrow at the top goes back to the list. Conversations from your connected AIs sit in the same list, marked with their app. Press ] to open and close it; closed on a wide screen, it waits as a spine at the page’s edge.

The bar at the bottom

A small floating bar at the bottom holds actions for the page you’re on. On a chapter, Not quite right? is there, for when the chapter has something wrong. On a narrow window, New thread is there too; on a wide one, use New on the threads pane or its spine.

The account menu

Your photo in the top right, next to your first name (or the team’s name, in a team workspace), opens the account menu:

• Workspaces: switch between your personal workspace and any team workspaces, or start a New team workspace.
• Bring history: bring in more past conversations, files, or Notion pages.
• Connect your AI: how to use Cranes from ChatGPT, Claude, and others.
• Settings: your account, connections, team, groups, and privacy.
• Appearance: System, Light, or Dark.
• Sign out

Search

Press ⌘ K (or Ctrl K on Windows) or the magnifying glass at the top left to search chapters, parts, threads, entries, and groups. More in Search and keyboard shortcuts.
