Where things go, and what happens next

Every way to bring something into Cranes, which place it lands in, and how Cranes learns from it.

Whatever you bring in is kept exactly as it came, as entries. Cranes then learns from them and drafts pages. You don’t have to sort or approve anything.

Where each thing goes

What you bring without naming a place goes to Just me, where only you read it. Nothing reaches Everyone or a group unless you choose it, or an owner or admin connected a source to feed it.

What you bring Where it goes Who sets it up
History from ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI Just me, in your personal workspace You
Files and Notion pages through Bring history Just me, in your personal workspace You
A note or files from Entries Just me, unless you pick another place You
Your own Notion, connected in your personal workspace Just me You
Granola meetings Just me, a group, or Everyone, meeting by meeting You
Slack, Linear, Jira, GitHub, and the team’s Notion Everyone or one group, chosen when it’s connected A team’s owners and admins

History is yours, so Bring history always brings it into your personal workspace. If you open it from a team, Cranes offers to open your personal workspace first.

Kept as entries

Each thing you bring becomes its own entry: one per moment from another AI, one per file, one per Notion page or database row, one per Slack message, issue, pull request, review, or meeting. Long ones are split at paragraph breaks, so a page can point to the right passage. If the same words are already there, they aren’t added twice.

You’ll find them all in Entries, filtered by place, where they came from, and who wrote them. The latest also show on Home under Added. See What an entry is.

Then learned

  • In Just me, Cranes reads what you add right away.
  • In Everyone or a group, what arrives is learned with the next pass, a few minutes after things stop arriving. A single message or issue never becomes the team’s view on its own.

While Cranes reads, Home shows how many entries it has read and quotes the passage it’s reading now. Pages change as each reading finishes. You can close the tab; reading carries on, and a refresh picks up where it left off.

A large import

An import can hold hundreds of entries. Cranes reads up to forty of them closely, spread across the whole import, starting with what you wrote yourself, oldest first. The rest are kept, and later readings draw on them when they matter. Nothing is thrown away.

The email

The first time you bring in history, we send one email when Cranes has learned from it. It lists the titles of your pages, never what they say, and how to bring Cranes into the AIs you use. See Emails from Cranes.

If bringing it in fails

If Bring history shows Couldn’t finish reading this, choose Try again and bring it in again. What was already kept isn’t added twice. For Notion, choose the same pages; it carries on from where it stopped.
