Bring in Notion
Bring your own Notion pages into Just me, or, as an owner or admin, connect the team’s Notion to Everyone or a group.
Cranes reads only the Notion pages and databases you share with it, and never changes them. It keeps reading them as they’re edited, about every 30 minutes.
- Your own pages go to Just me in your personal workspace. Anyone can bring them in.
- The team’s pages, like a handbook, runbooks, or specs, feed Everyone or one group. Only a team’s owners and admins connect them.
Bring in your own pages
- In your personal workspace, open the account menu (your photo and name, at the bottom left) and choose Bring history.
- Under From what you’ve written, choose Notion.
- In Notion’s window, pick the pages and databases Cranes may read, and allow access. Sharing a page includes everything beneath it.
- Back in Cranes, choose one:
- Everything I shared, then Bring it all in.
- Choose pages, tick the ones you want, then Bring it in.
Connect your personal Notion workspace if you have one. A team’s Notion is mostly other people’s writing, and Cranes learns how you think from what you wrote.
There’s no limit on how much you can bring. A large workspace takes a while; Cranes shows how many pages it has kept, and you can leave and come back.
Afterwards, Notion shows in Settings › Connected Services, reading the same pages. You can also connect it there to begin with: choose Connect on Notion, then Continue to Notion.
Connect the team’s Notion
- In the team, open Settings › Connected Services and choose Connect on Notion.
- Choose What it feeds: the team’s thinking, or a group’s.
- Choose Continue to Notion, sign in if asked, and pick the pages Cranes may read.
Cranes reads the pages straight away. What a page says is learned as how the team describes its work, and Cranes can notice where Slack, issues, or reviews show the work going differently. Everyone who reads the place it feeds can see these pages as entries.
Share more pages
- From Cranes: open Notion in Settings › Connected Services and choose Choose pages. Notion’s picker opens with the pages you already shared still ticked. Add more and continue; Cranes reads them straight away.
- From Notion: on the page, open ⋯ › Connections and add Cranes. Choose Read now in Cranes to read it straight away.
You can connect the same Notion workspace more than once, for example once for Everyone and once for a group. Each connection reads only the pages chosen for it, never a page another of your Notion connections reads, so a group’s pages stay out of Everyone’s and your own stay out of both. To move a page, remove Cranes from it in Notion, then choose it from the connection it should feed.
Each page becomes an entry
Each page becomes one entry, with its title, properties, and text. Each row of a database becomes its own entry too. An entry is dated when the page was last edited in Notion. When a page is edited, the newer version replaces the older one. Pages in the trash are skipped.
In your own thinking, Cranes checks who wrote each page. A page someone else wrote is marked, such as Written by Maya Chen, and one written with others Written with …. Cranes learns how you think from what you wrote.
Comments when the thinking moves
Cranes can leave a comment on a Notion page when the thinking it fed has moved on from what the page says. It’s off until you turn it on. See Bring latest thinking back to Notion.
If something goes wrong
| You see | Try this |
|---|---|
| Nothing shared yet. | You didn’t pick any pages in Notion. Go through Notion’s window again, then choose Refresh. |
| Some selected Notion pages are no longer shared. | Someone changed the sharing in Notion. Choose Refresh and pick again. |
| No readable Notion content was found. | The pages are empty, or hold nothing Cranes can read. Share pages with writing in them. |
| Notion was not connected. | You closed Notion’s window before allowing access. Try again. |
Stop reading
Open Notion in Settings › Connected Services and choose Remove Notion. Cranes stops reading and stops any comments. Entries already brought in stay. In a team, only owners and admins can remove it. To stop reading one page, remove Cranes from that page’s connections in Notion.
