Connect Jira

For owners and admins, let Everyone or a group learn from Jira issues and comments, and answer @Cranes in comments.

Connecting Jira lets Everyone, or a group, learn from the issues and comments in the Jira Cloud projects you choose, including how the work turned out. Only a team’s owners and admins can connect it, and only in a team workspace.

Set it up

  1. In the team, open Settings › Connected Services and choose Connect on Jira.
  2. Fill in:
    • Jira address: like yourteam.atlassian.net.
    • Projects: each project’s key, separated by commas. It’s the prefix on its issue numbers, like OPS in OPS-12.
    • What it feeds: the team’s thinking, or a group’s.
  3. Choose Continue to Jira and approve read access in Atlassian. Your account needs to see those projects.

Cranes reads the last 30 days of issues straight away, then changes about every 15 minutes.

What becomes an entry

  • Each issue: its key, summary, status, and description. When it changes, including when it’s reopened, done, or abandoned, the newer version replaces the older one.
  • Each comment, credited to its author’s Jira name.

When someone’s Atlassian account is closed, Cranes removes their name from these entries and shows them as a former Jira user. Their words stay.

Issues are learned with the next pass, and a single issue never becomes the team’s view on its own. Everyone who reads the place it feeds can see these entries, so feed a group only when its members may see those projects.

Ask @Cranes in a comment

  1. Open Jira in Settings › Connected Services.
  2. Under Mentions in Jira, choose Answer “@Cranes” in Jira, and allow Cranes to add comments and watch for new ones.

Then write a comment that includes @Cranes, like @Cranes do we need a second reviewer for this?. Jira won’t suggest anyone as you type; just type it. Cranes answers in the issue from the thinking this connection feeds, and ends with whose thinking it drew on and a link to open it in Cranes. Everyone who can see the issue reads the answer. It can also check Linear, Notion, or GitHub when you ask.

Jira gives apps no user of their own, so answers post as the person who turned this on, starting with “Cranes:”.

Cranes answers only people it can match to someone on the team, by the email on their Atlassian account. If it replies that it can’t find you, make your email visible to your organization in your Atlassian profile, or ask an admin to invite the email you use there. Cranes keeps nothing from a comment it can’t match. To stop, choose Stop answering in Jira.

Disconnect

Only owners and admins can remove it. Choose Remove Jira on the connection. Cranes stops reading and removes Jira authors’ names from the entries it brought in; the entries stay.
