Start a thread

A thread is a conversation inside Cranes. Replies draw on your thinking, and everything you say becomes an entry your thinking learns from. Use one to work through a decision, test an idea, or tell Cranes where it has you wrong.

Start one

Any of these works:

• Choose New at the top of the threads pane, or on its spine when it’s folded away (on a narrow screen, New thread in the bar at the bottom).
• Type in the box at the bottom of the threads list and send.
• On an empty front page, choose Start a thread.

Type your message and press Enter to send. Shift Enter starts a new line. The reply appears as it’s written.

After the first reply, Cranes gives the thread a short title in your language.

Attach files

Choose + beside the message box, or drop files onto the thread. You can attach up to 20 at once. They upload when you send, and each becomes an entry, just like files added from the Entries page.

What happens to what you say

Every message you send is kept as an entry: in your own thinking, or in the group’s for a group thread. Your thinking learns from a thread’s messages together, after a few messages or once the conversation goes quiet for a while. The replies are not treated as your words.

A thread you start is yours alone; no one else can read it, including a team’s owners and admins. The only way to share a thread is to start it in a group. See Start and run a group.

If something goes wrong

• “The connection dropped. Your message is kept; try again.” Your message is safe. Send again when you’re back online.
• “Unable to continue. Try again.” Something failed on our side. Try again in a moment; if it keeps happening, let us know.
