Help Bringing in your history

Bring history from ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok

Ask an AI you’ve used for a while to gather what you’ve said, then paste its answer into Cranes.

The AI you’ve been talking to for months already has a record of how you think. Cranes gives you a prompt that asks it to gather that record in a form Cranes can read. You paste the prompt in, then paste the answer back.

Steps

  1. Open Bring history. During setup it’s the second step; later, it’s in the account menu.
  2. Choose ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or Another AI.
  3. Under Copy this into…, choose Copy prompt.
  4. Open that AI in another tab, start a new chat, paste the prompt, and send it.
  5. Copy its whole answer, including the first line that starts with “Access.”
  6. Back in Cranes, paste it into Paste what it gives back and choose Bring it in.

If the answer stops early

Long histories often don’t fit in one reply. If the answer ends with “More available,” or stops partway:

  1. Choose Copy the continue prompt in Cranes.
  2. Paste it into the same chat and send it.
  3. Paste the new answer into Cranes below the first one, not in place of it.

Repeat until it stops saying there’s more, then choose Bring it in.

What the prompt asks for

The prompt asks the other AI for 40 to 80 short snapshots across the conversations it can actually see. Each one has a title and date, the area of your life or work it belongs to, a little context, your own words (quoted exactly where possible, and marked as a paraphrase where not), and what it shows about how you judge things. It asks for decisions, trade-offs, corrections, and changes of mind, because those say the most.

It also tells the AI what not to do: no personality profile, no rules about you, no summary, no personal details it doesn’t need, and nothing made up. If the AI can’t see your past chats at all, it says so on the “Access” line instead of inventing them.

Good to know

  • You can paste up to 400,000 characters at once. That’s a lot; most answers are far shorter.
  • The answer is split into separate entries, one per snapshot, so each chapter can point back to exactly where it came from.
  • If you paste the same thing twice, the duplicate isn’t added again.
  • Some AIs only see a limited slice of your history, or none, depending on your plan and memory settings. That’s fine. Bring what it has, and add more later from another source.
